The Weber BulletAccording to a recent story in The Advocate, a newspaper out of Connecticut, Purple Turtle Catering has won another grand championship.
This is nothing new for Nancy Gell and Greg Hunter. I've competed alongside these folks on more than one occasion, the last being Grillin' On The Bay, where they won the overall Grand Championship as well.
So what's their secret to success? Beats me. Actually I've never tried their recipes, but the judges seem to love them. What I do know is that you will always find their trusty Weber Smokey Mountain cookers lined up like soldiers ready for battle.
What this proves to me is that it's definitely not the cooker, but the cook that will produce the best BBQ. The Weber Smokey Mountain, Weber Bullet or WSM, whatever you like to call them, are probably the best bang for your BBQ buck. I have one, that I bring to every competition, but for other reasons I've chosen Big Green Eggs as my primary BBQ.
I guess the point is, that you need to get out their and throw some smoke in the air. Practice. Cook a lot of BBQ, experiment and test recipes.
You don't need an array of expensive cookers to produce some of the finest BBQ to be found.
